Babywearing Comes with Many Perks for this Busy Mom
When I first started trying to get out of the house more often I started very small. My favorite activity to add into our routine was strapping my baby into her carrier and taking a walk around the neighborhood. This ended up becoming a time in my day where I could slow down and enjoy some bonding time with my daughter. Babywearing made this activity so easy that it provided the needed encouragement for me to consistently stay active with my baby.
There are many different styles of baby carriers and I highly recommend trying them all. When I was pregnant, I thought the soft baby wrap carriers sounded too confusing to use. However, once I figured out how to tie it I absolutely loved using it with my newborn baby. As my baby got older I grew to love my structured buckle carrier. It made carrying her increasing weight much easier. Try out many different types of baby carriers to find out what you like best.
There are many pros and cons to baby wearing. Here are my personal favorite pros to babywearing:
I find that if I am babywearing my daughter is much more engaged and interactive on our walks. She is old enough that I typically have her strapped to my chest and facing forward. My daughter loves to swing her feet as if she were also walking and she babbles to our dog walking beside her. From past experience, if I were to take her on a walk in her stroller then she would take a nap. Babywearing allows our walks to continue to be an interactive adventure.
Babywearing allows us to cover a much wider variety of terrain on our adventures. I love that when my baby is strapped to me I do not have to worry about if the ground is bumpy or uneven. To get to the walking path next to our house, you have to walk across a small field of grass. If my daughter were in a stroller, this stretch would be like a bouncy, rocky roller coaster. Without my baby carrier, we may have needed to reconsider some of our outings (like this hike!).
As a busy mom, you find that you need flexibility wherever you can find it and babywearing helps make that possible. You really cannot beat the flexibility that babywearing offers when going on a walk or outing. Need to go through a tight crowd? No problem. Need to go upstairs? No problem. Need to fit into a tight elevator? I don’t really want to, but I can. If you had a stroller in any of these places, you may need to take your child out and fold up the stroller. That sounds like a lot of work! Luckily, with a baby carrier you have the flexibility to go wherever your journey takes you.
My favorite positive to babywearing is the cuddle factor; however this may vary from baby to baby based on their personality and age. My daughter is at that stage where she is super cuddly and is happiest when she is touching mom or dad. So, she tends to be happier and content for a longer period of time if she is in a baby carrier. When she is in the stroller she cannot directly see us and that gives her a little bit of anxiety at this phase. Babywearing allows your daily neighborhood walk to transform into a cuddly bonding experience.
If you are like me and struggle to schedule a workout into your busy mom schedule then an added perk is a potential workout. I have consistently used baby carriers since my daughter was born. As she has gained weight, my workout has gradually gotten a little tougher. If the workout is a little too hard, many carriers can convert into different positions which make the walk much easier. A key to being a busy momma is multitasking and babywearing lets you bond with baby and work out at the same time.
There is a relatively short window of time in your child’s life when babywearing is enjoyable for all parties. I am still blown away by how quickly my daughter has grown and transformed in her first year of life. Baby wearing has enabled me to enjoy the limited amount of time that she is a little one. There will soon be a day when she does not want to be in a baby carrier and would prefer to be walking around. I am grateful that babywearing allowed me to embrace those moments.
There are so many benefits that babywearing has brought to me in the first year of my daughter’s life. From making it easier to get out of the house to adding a workout into my schedule the pros have greatly outweighed any negative aspects. I hope that you try out babywearing as well and enjoy the quality time with your little one!
